Awesome Old Buildings in Richmond

Hey friends, so as we all know I work at a museum; which part of it is an 1812 house.  So we went on Monday to Monumental Church and the Egyptian building next door.

Monumental Church was build in 1812 until 1814, after the Richmond Theater burned December 26, 1811.  It is a gorgeous building, which was an Episcopal church until the 1960s.  The committee to fund the church was started by Chief Justice John Marshall, a well known man in Richmond; who had his own pew but since he was so tall would keep his feet out in the aisle.

In the basement of the church was a crypt dedicated to all those who died in the fire.  72 people lost their lives that night, including the Governor of Virginia and his family, plus a whole family from grandparents to new children.

The crypt was a brick mason work, which was amazing.

Across the street, Broad St. is the Department of Transportation for Virginia.  Their logo is "Dedicated to the Comfort and Safety of Those Who Travel the Highways of the Commonwealth of Virginia."  Which itself makes me laugh too much.

Right behind Monumental Church is the Egyptian building, one of the last ones in the United States.

The Egyptian building really does look like Egypt.  It actually is wider at the base than at the top.  It slopes in, which is really cool.  The fence around the building has little mummy sarcophage, with their toes sticking out.  It was super cute!!!

Well friends, Richmond is a great place to live!!  Just stop and enjoy the buildings all around!
